We were passing the bloated corpse of Lake Delores when I get a story that helped me understand how my Mom and Jack ended up together.
"Have you ever heard about the first road trip that your mother and I took?"
I pulled out my earbuds.
"No."
"Well, do you know how your mother went on road trips as a child?"
"No."
"Johni, tell him what road trips were like when you were growing up?"
She gathered herself and told the story.
"Your grandparents would have us all in the car and we would drive and drive and drive. We would look at the window and say "Look at that! Can we go see what that is?" and your grandfather said "NO!" And we would see different roads and say "Can we see where that road goes to?" and your grandfather would say "NO!" So we would never stop until we got to the planned destination. And when we got there, we would eat plain bologna sandwiches."
"So on my first road trip with Jack, I saw something that looked interesting and said "I wonder what is over there." Jack immediately changed course and we started driving in that direction."
Jack finished the story.
"So that's why we don't have much of a plan for this trip. We'll go to new places and see different things. That's the way we like explore the country."
And that is why I won't be able to tell you all where we are going to head on The Bucket Trip.
I like Jack!!!!
ReplyDeletethat is a TRUE Venture! My step dad called them Ventures, because we never knew where we were going?
ReplyDeleteMy Dad used to just take random exits and see where they led.
